Abstract

Each of us has had a mentor during our careers–a professor or teacher who inspired us, a community leader who addressed our interests, or a parent who shaped our view of the world. Often mentors give us a guide towards realizing our personal goals. As Professional Wetland Scientists or Wetland Professionals in Training, we can provide leadership and inspiration to other wetland professionals. While there are many reasons to become certified, individuals who could become PWS/WPIT are not aware of the program or its benefits. In addition, many applicants have questions concerning the application process and the applicability of their courses and experience in meeting professional training requirements. Finally, finding other certified PWS who can prepare letters of reference may slow down the application process. While the Certification Review Committee members can often answer these questions, we realize that having contacts within each Chapter can improve our service to prospective applicants. We are seeking individuals within the Chapters to serve as mentors to prospective applicants. Chapter PWS mentors will be listed on the PWS web page with their email address and would need to be available to answer questions and assist applicants in completing forms. Often this would only entail short responses or making contact with Review Committee members to assist applicants. For those with a greater interest, it could involve making presentations at the Chapter meetings to encourage others to become certified. Chapter PWS mentors can also assist in making the program better known on campuses and in government and private consulting. If you are interested in serving as a Chapter mentor, please contact me at my email address: josselyn@wra-ca.com. The number of certified wetland professionals continued to grow during 2003. The Certification Committee awarded PWS status to 38 individuals and WPIT status to 17 individuals whose names are given below. The Board extends its congratulations to these new members and looks forward to their participation in the program with all the privileges and benefits professional certification can provide. For those of you attending the 2003 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, please look for the PWS booth. Special recognition stickers will be available for your nametag and information on the PWS/WPIT social will be available. You can also learn about the PWS insurance program as well as other benefits.
