Abstract

The application of a Photovoltaic (PV) integrated Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) to reduce harmonics generated by non-linear loads and enhance grid Power Quality (PQ) is investigated in this study. The UPQC is made up of a series and shunt compensator, which are interfaced sequentially to the common dc-link. In addition to minimization of load current harmonics, the shunt compensator also draws electricity from the PV array. The operation of the UPQC is strengthened further by obtaining load active current component using dq. The PQ issues on the side of the grid in the form of voltage sag/swell is balanced using the series compensator. The proposed approach offers the combined advantages of power quality enhancement and sustainable power generation. For maximum power extraction from PV modules, a Cascaded Fuzzy based Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is applied to a Cuk converter. The Cuk converter is an efficient high gain converter with continuous input current along with voltage boosting and bucking capability. The Cascaded fuzzy based MPPT approach complements the proposed control approach with its quick and accurate tracking performance. The dynamic and steady state performance of PV integrated UPQC are assessed using Matlab simulations.
