Putting the Past to Work for the Future

Abstract

The value of history needs to be better understood. History is a component of cultural economic development, historic preservation enhances community real estate values, historical and cultural buildings and programs enhance quality of life and are factors considered by businesses when deciding where to locate, and heritage preservation is a major contributor to the state's economy. New York has a legacy of leadership in preservation, and the State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation's 2009–2013 plan Historic Preservation at a Crossroads, developed after extensive meetings and consultation in the state's historical community, provides the basis for continuing and expanding that tradition. Statewide efforts need to aim toward several goals, including using historic preservation, heritage development, and tourism to stimulate the state and local economies; expanding incentives and assistance programs to foster preservation; integrating historic preservation into smart growth policies; expanding advisory and outreach opportunities; and strengthening collaboration and preservation.
