Abstract

Abstract A system for arriving at the current cost and returns of producing milk in the Southwest was requested by dairy farmers. The Crop and Livestock Budget Generator Program of the Oklahoma State University Department of Agriculture Economics was selected as the computer model for this purpose. Production input data are secured from selected dairy farmers, extension dairy and farm management specialists in each state, dairy producers, and cooperative and commercial dairy firms. Periodic computer computations have been made since March 1973 and will be continued on a 2- to 3-mo schedule. This method provides a comparison of past and current costs and returns of producing milk.
