Abstract

As a result of the Asian tsunami of 26 December 2004, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 250 000 people died and many more thousands were made homeless (WHO, 2008). Due to an unprecedented emergency response by the governments and citizens of the international community, millions of pounds were raised and food, aid and medicines were sent quickly to displaced populations. Similarly, China has received more than $3 billion in foreign aid following the devastating earthquake on 12 May 2008, and has implemented one of the largest humanitarian relief operations in history.
