Abstract
This article describes the development and preliminary validation of the Big Picture Appraisal Questionnaire (BPAQ), designed to measure a way of viewing distressing events that involves developing a wider perspective. In Study 1, an initial pool of items, written based on both theoretical considerations and input from various informants was administered to a large sample of undergraduates and items were selected for inclusion in the BPAQ based on an exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Internal consistency of the resulting 23-item BPAQ was high, and correlations of the draft BPAQ with measures of similar and dissimilar constructs were supportive of its convergent discriminant validity. A second EFA on the reduced pool of items yielded four factors consistent with theory. In Study 2 the BPAQ was administered to a sample of depression-vulnerable community volunteers prior to their participation in another study. Internal consistency and convergent-discriminant validity of the BPAQ were again supported.
