He has received the MAA's Haimo Award for teaching and its Allendoerfer and Evans awards for exposition. He is co-director of Project NExT and is the MAA Polyá Lecturer for 2000–2001. In the course of directing summer research programs for undergraduate students since 1977 he has worked with many Putnam Fellows. Besides math, he teaches a Humanities course called the “The Lives and Music of the Beatles”. His hobbies are flower gardening and rooting for Notre Dame teams.
