Abstract

Joseph Kauffman has for some time promised the higher education community an important book on the college presidency. His articles on executive leadership, and his monograph on the search process, reflect a deep commitment to the professional and personal attributes of a president. Professor Kauffman, once a president himself, then a teacher and scholar, has just recently returned to the administrative trenches as executive vice-president of the Wisconsin System. He brings an extraordinary combination of insight and care to his study of the presidency. Once his intent is stated-to develop the empathy and compassion that I believe our presidents deserve-he pursues that goal through an elusive and uncertain terrain.
