Abstract
The British Columbian government has sent shivers round the academic establishment with its decision to abolish life tenure in its University. Dr Walter Block of Vancouver's Fraser Institute examines the arguments ‐ independence, quality of teaching, savings in cost, … ‐from the academics and dismisses them as unfounded and self‐interested. Sir Keith Joseph could easily apply Dr Block's analysis to British universities ‐ but the reaction might be even fiercer than in Canada.
