Abstract

Background: Transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) is a novel technique developed to overcome the difficulties and improve the oncological results in patients with narrow pelvis and bulky mesorectum. Аchieving an air-tight purse-string suture is а crucial step in an oncologically safe TaTME and could be challenging at the beginning of the learning curve. Purse-string failure could theoretically increase the risk of local recurrence by tumor cell spillage and aerosolization of these tumor cells by the transanal insufflation.
