Abstract

1. 1. Aqueous digitonin and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide extracts of cattle retinal rods were fractionated on columns of calcium phosphate gel and a I:I mixture of calcium triphosphate and celite. 2. 2. The best fractions, obtained by eluting with solutions of digitonin in phosphate buffer, showed ratios of the extinction at 278 mμ over extinction at 498 mμ ( E 278 498 ) of 1.86 to 2.17. Values for E 400 498 ranged from 0.20 to 0.28, and values for mg N/ E 498 from 0.142 to 0.152. Extraction and elution with cetyl trimethylammonium bromide gave no fractions with extinction ratios approaching those obtained with digitonin.
