Abstract

A procedure was worked out to obtain genotypically homozygous progenies of Races B and C of Mayctiola destructor (Say) by manipulation of genes of these races. Avirulent (unable to survive or stunt) larvae are known to survive on resistant wheat cultivars when together with virulent (able to survive and stunt) larvae. Therefore, by leaving a single egg per plant, only a homozygous virulent larva was able to survive on a susceptible cultivar, but it could still be heterozygous for virulence to a cultivar with a different resistance. Additionally, interracial reciprocal progeny testing was used to identify heterozygous flies. They were discarded, and only homozygous flies were saved for further increase to genotypically pure populations.
