Abstract

A highly purified glycoprotein has been isolated from rabbit seminal plasma by gel, ion-exchange, and affinity chromatography. Using a monospecific antiserum developed in guinea pig against this glycoprotein, it was possible to establish its presence in rabbit uterine secretions. The carbohydrate content and the migration characteristics in both disc and immunoelectrophoresis confirms its acid glycoprotein character. These parameters were compared with rabbit serum acid-glycoprotein, but no similarities could be established. The site of synthesis of this acid-glycoprotein in the male is not clear, but the whole complex of the accessory sexual organs is involved. In the female, however, the uterus is considered to be the site of synthesis. As there is no other organ or tissue in the rabbit which contains this protein, it is thought to be a specific genital tract antigen; the function of this protein is currently unknown.
