Abstract
The energy loss spectra observed in collisions of a CO + ion beam with a neutral Ar beam reveal inelastic processes occurring with an energy loss below that required for the ν = 0 → 1 vibrational transition. These inelastic events correspond to pure rotational excitation of the incident ion beam with a large change in rotational quantum number.
