Abstract

New ventures (NVs) and small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often face myriad competitive challenges based on their newness and/or size. These firms, however, also may enjoy advantages that enable them to compete successfully with larger, more established firms. We posit that the rise of digital technologies (DTs) may impact key assumptions in extant research about these issues. Accordingly, employing a digital entrepreneurship (DE) perspective, we first briefly review extant liabilities of newness, liabilities of smallness, and assets of newness research. Next, we examine how DTs may enhance some NV and SME advantages and at least partially mitigate various disadvantages. In doing so, we discuss DTs' potential impact on the entrepreneurial process, in general, as well as their potential effect on other important entrepreneurial topics (e.g., raising capital and accessing human resources). We conclude by suggesting future DT research avenues related to NV and SME performance and competitiveness.
