Abstract
AbstractPumps are used in a wide range of industrial applications in the chemical processing industries. Pumping equipment varies widely in terms of pump type, size, and materials of construction. The two principal pump types, kinetic, which is mainly centrifugal, and positive displacement, are presented and basic operating parameters such as capacity, head, power, efficiency, and specific speed are defined. Fundamentals of operation are discussed, selection guidelines given, and examples of pump applications and reliability concerns provided. Pump auxiliaries such as couplings and seals, as well as effects of cavitation, recirculation, internal hydraulic forces, wear, and corrosion, are described. Cost approximation methodology is presented along with a list of manufacturers.
