Abstract

Methods used to install the bentonite seal and sand-cement grout seal for multi-level piezometers are described. After problems developed in trying to use bentonite pellets to install a seal, powdered bentonite was mixed with water for form a paste which was pumped to the bottom of the hole. Additives were used in the sand-cement grout above the bentonite seal to prevent shrinkage of the grout away from the wall of the hole and to retard the initial set until the casing could be pulled.
