Abstract
The nonlinear optical method of pulse train compression up to terahertz repetition rate is described theoretically. Degenerate four-photon mixing of counterpropagating pulses in birefringent fiber is proposed to compress pulse train. Analytical expressions of the intensity and period of compressed pulse train are derived. The timing jitter problem and limitations of the efficiency of the four-photon mixing caused by the attendant nonlinear optical effects are discussed.
