Abstract

A pulse radiolysis study of polyethylene, pure and in the presence of pyrene has been carried out in the temperature range 30–295 K. An absorption band extended up to 2100 nm observed at T < 100 K is attributed to trapped electrons. In doped polyethylene transient absorption bands due to pyrene anion and cation are observed. The decay of ions is influenced by photobleaching and can be described by time dependent rate constant. The activation energy of solute ions decay is temperature dependent and is equal to ca. 84.1 and 1.77 kJ mol -1 for temperatures > T g and < T g respectively.
