Abstract

Rate constants of the reactions of OH and O– with NO–2, HCO–2, I–, H2O2 and HO–2 have been measured using the carbonate competition method at pH 11 and 13. The results are consistent with the rapid establishment of the equilibrium, OH + OH–⇌ O–+ H2O. The pH dependence of the yield of O–3 in oxygenated alkaline solution is consistent with the rapid establishment of an acid-base equilibrium, pK = 10.4, which is probably HO3+ OH–⇌ O–3+ H2O.
