Abstract

To the Editor: Buccal pulse oximetry has been shown to be a reliable method of measuring oxygen saturation [1]. It is especially useful in patients with decreased cardiac output, hypothermia, increased systemic vascular resistance; those who are shivering; and those whose extremities or digits have been interfered with mechanically. Disadvantages of this method include special preparation of the probe and copious secretion resulting in dislodgment from the mouth. We have developed an easy, clean, and inexpensive method of modifying an adult Nelcor[trademark symbol] Pulse Oximetry probe (Nellcor Puritan-Bennett, Inc., Pleasanton, CA) for buccal use. As seen in Figure 1, an adult disposable glove thumb can be easily placed over the probe. This provides a reliable reading and avoids contamination of the probe with oral secretion.Figure 1: An adult disposable glove thumb can be easily placed over the probe.Stephen R. Rogers, MD Tong J.
