Abstract

This chapter focuses on the shootings at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida in 2016. There was a huge outpouring on social media as a consequence of this event that could be organized and understood topically. Methods of analysis include topic modelling of tweets, as well as qualitative analysis of images posted on Instagram. As is often the case with both individual deaths and mass shootings, memorials in many forms are an important part of the process of grieving and remembering. In the case of Pulse, these memorials took the form of online tributes, ad hoc memorials at the nightclub, a temporary memorial fence erected six months after the shooting, and plans for a new museum structure on the site. This provides the opportunity to study the effect and reaction to each of these memorials on social media.
