Abstract
In this paper, a novel pulse mapping method is proposed to high speed impulse radio (IR) ultra wideband (UWB) systems. Recently, UWB systems have become an attractive topic for ultra high-speed transmission in WPAN. As a UWB approach, IR technology promises to bring a simple transceiver structure with low power consumption and low cost. Effective mapping methods for a high-order IR modulation have been not considered yet, although the high-order IR modulation could be employed to the wireless link above 1 Giga-bit per second (Gbps). This novel pulse mapping can maximize the Hamming distance between all neighboring pulses, which applying the same concept as Trellis-Coded modulation in carrier-based systems. As shown by computer simulation, the proposed pulse mapping can improve system BER performance with the help of forward error correction codes, which comparing with the conventional Gray mapping method.
