Abstract
Pulse-induced critical scattering (PICS) is used to explore the onset of phase separation in sterically stabilized colloidal silica dispersions up to high volume fractions of about 0.30. PICS proves to be a very useful technique in measuring spinodals of these silica systems, while operating in the metastable region of the phase diagram. The obtained spinodal curves are compared with the theory of adhesive hard spheres. The agreement between the experimental curves and the theoretical ones is quite reasonable.
