Abstract

The response of liquid scintillator solutions to alpha particles in the energy range 0.8 to 8 MeV and electrons in the energy range 0.022 to 1 MeV has been investigated. The observed pulse height-energy relations are in good agreement with data reported for organic crystals and plastic scintillators. The results indicate a pronounced nonlinearity for alpha particles over most of the energy range and a nonlinearity for electrons below about 100 keV. For electrons above 100 keV a linear relation with a positive energy intercept of 20 keV is obtained which appears to be applicable to all organic scintillators.
