Abstract

The design, fabrication and performance of an optically addressed spatial light modulator (SLM) that receives an analog optical input and generates a pulse frequency modulation output is discussed. The SLM consists of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) modulator on a CMOS VLSI chip. Smectic C* FLCs essentially provide only binary modulation. Pulse frequency modulation enables smectic C* FLCs to linearly encode analog data over several orders of magnitude.
