Abstract

The delay times between neutron-induced proton events and the associated pulse of electrons in a gas-filled proportional counter have been measured as a function of pulse height for different gas pressures and primary neutron energies. Qualitative explanations are advanced for the marked correlations observed between delay time and pulse height, and to explain why the measured delay times are much longer than those expected from the simple theory of electron drift times.
