Abstract

An analytical study is made to clarify the effects of steady and unsteady magnetic fields on the pulsating pipe-flow characteristics of magnetic fluid in the laminar regime. Based on Shliomis' equations, time-varying velocity profiles in a circular pipe is obtained as a function of the Womersley number and a magnetic field strength parameter. It is clarified that the velocity profiles are influenced by the Womersley number and also by phase difference between periodical pressure and magnetic field fluctuations. It is also confirmed that the pressure gradient is much larger in the experiment than in the theoretical analysis in a pulsating flow with constant amplitude in a steady magnetic field.
