Abstract

A review of the carious process shows that the presence of microorganisms, proteolysis and acid softening of the calcified dental tissues distinguishes dental caries from other processes, erosion or attrition, which affect tooth structure. The toxicity of the bacterial products of caries has not been tested, nor has the hypothesis that the bacteria associated with caries exert an antibiotic effect on the pyogenic microorganisms associated with inflammation and abscess formation of the pulp.
