Abstract

The footbridge recently constructed at Des Moines (USA) is noteworthy in that the approaches to it are curved, and it is supported by cylindrical columns. As the ground was not sufficiently consistent, it became necessary to reinforce it by driving piles into it. The foundation slab was concreted on top of the piles, and this in turn supports the bridge columns. The abutments also rest on a pile foundation. The approaches are steeply inclined, in order to provide enough clearance over the roadway. The deck consists of a continuous reinforced concrete double T shaped section, 60 cm in depth, 2.75 m wide along the top, and 1.50 m wide along the bottom. The only dilation joints are fitted between the extremities of the deck and the abutments. The design of this structure has been carefully thought out in every detail, especially since the slender columns and sharp curves give it a particularly stylized quality. The final result is one of extreme gracefulness and aesthetic charm. The project has been designed by Howard, Needles, Tammen & Bergendoff.

Summary
