espanolEste articulo contribuye al debate acerca de la capacidad de las uni-versidades para articular multiples objetivos de las diversas partes interesadas en torno a propositos comunes. Se utiliza la Teoria de Agencia como marco analitico para estudiar las relaciones de gobier-no entre los principales componentes del gobierno institucional de tres universidades chilenas: la Junta Directiva, la Administracion Cen-tral y las Facultades, con especial foco en el nivel de coherencia entre las prioridades institucionales oficiales y los objetivos operativos que persiguen las unidades academicas. Los resultados muestran dispares niveles de alineamiento de objetivos y diferentes practicas de gobierno entre los casos. EnglishThis article contributes to the debate on the capacity of universities to articulate the multiple priorities of various stakeholders based on common aims. Agency theory is used as an analytical framework to study the governance relationships between the main components of institutional governance in three Chilean universities: the board of di-rectors, central administration and faculties, with a particular focus on the level of coherence between official institutional priorities and academic units’ operational aims. The results show disparate levels of aim alignment and different governance practices depending on the case.
