Abstract

The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (the Federal Parity Law) requires that insurers treat illnesses of the brain the same way that they treat illnesses of the body. However, ten years later many individuals, including older adults, are needing to pay more out of pocket to obtain treatment for illnesses of the brain. The Carter Center Mental Health Program in collaboration with The Morehouse School of Medicine/ Kennedy-Satcher Center for Mental Health Equity and The Kennedy Forum are taking action aimed at improving regulatory and enforcement activity in order to advance the goals of parity.
