Abstract

Renewed interest in the effectiveness of public notification systems has been stimulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) requirement for public notification around each nuclear power plant. Power utilities throughout the country have taken different approaches to try to comply with the NRC's requirement. Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) took a direct approach and evaluated the effectiveness of a siren's coverage which provided guidance to finalization of a public notification system design.
