Abstract

This article surveys the development of public library services for children and young people during the years between the Roberts Report of 1959 on The Structure of the Public Library Service in England and Wales and the reorganization of local government areas in 1974. It is the concluding article in a series of six, two of which appeared in the Library Association Record ( July 1967 and August 1969) and three in the Journal of Librarianship (April 1970, January 1971, and January 1972) . It describes the trends of library work with young people during a period, the early part of which was relatively prosperous, whilst the latter was marked by economic difficulties which contributed to restrict the intentions of the Public Libraries and Museums Act of 1964.
