Abstract

Broad implementation of practical diabetes surveillance systems within managed care organizations will prove extremely useful to both managed care and public health in their mutual goal of optimal health of the populations they serve. A surveillance system has been developed that includes outpatient, inpatient, laboratory, and pharmacy service utilization. This type of population-based surveillance systems is critical for assessing changing patterns of care in response to changing guidelines or new developments in healthcare delivery.
