Abstract
Evaluation of performance in graduate medical education has evolved into competency-based assessments over the past few decades. Milestones 1.0 were created in 2012 as part of the Next Accreditation System. Over a decade later, the updating of these competencies is underway. Milestones 2.0 for the specialty of Public Health and General Preventive Medicine were completed in the spring of 2022 and implemented on July 1, 2022. Milestones 1.0 provided a strong foundation upon which to create Milestones 2.0. There were many challenges with Milestones 1.0, including the number of themes within a subcompetency and some vague and misunderstood language. The Milestones 2.0 addressed these challenges by decreasing the overall number of subcompetencies and themes, using more concise language, and providing specific examples through a Supplemental Guide. These updated milestones better represent the breadth of the General Preventive Medicine specialty and will be a more useful tool in resident education.
