Abstract

This chapter presents selected key industry statistics on the structure and volume of public funding for film and audiovisual works in Europe between 2010 and 2014. We look into three indicators more deeply: the number of public funding bodies, funding body income by type of source (government budgets, levies, etc.), and funding spend by type of supported activity. We find that the number of public funding bodies in the 35 European countries covered remained equal over time. After increasing in 2011, funding body income remained fairly stable up until 2013 before slightly declining in 2014 as contributions from government budgets no longer compensated for decreasing broadcaster contributions. Funding body spend increased steadily over time. Public funding was mainly dedicated to support the development and production of films. Subsidies to theatrical exhibition, promotion activities, structural funding, audience development, training and video games, however, grew above average.
