Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the key concepts of public and digital diplomacy. It starts with the acknowledgment of public diplomacy as a major weapon in a diplomat's armoury. Since the digital revolution has changed the world faster than any previous technology, diplomacy is once more having to reconnect to new sources of power, especially when digital media are also increasingly important resources for those responding to humanitarian crises. Thus, the role of diplomats is being transformed faster than at any point in history. The chapter elaborates on the four phases of digital diplomacy while also considering the boundaries between secrecy and privacy.
