Pubic Hair in Infancy

Abstract

Sir.—Public hair developing before age 1 year is rare and to our knowledge, development of pubic hair before age 6 months has not been previously reported.1,2We describe our experience with three infant girls who developed pubic hair within the first year of life. Patient Report.—Patient1.—A white infant girl was born with two or three strands of pubic hair that were first noticed by nursing personnel and later confirmed by the mother. The full-term infant weighed 3220 g at birth and was the product of an uncomplicated pregnancy. Her mother denied virilization or hirsutism and use of any medications during this or prior pregnancies. Pubic hair increased in amount slowly during the first 12 months, resulting in a referral for an endocrinologic evaluation at age 13 months.
