PTU-235 Assessment of patient’s health related quality of life (HRQL) following elective laparoscopic colorectal surgery for complicated diverticulitis

Abstract

<h3>Introduction</h3> Complicated Diverticulitis leads to lower quality of life. Health related quality of Life (HRQL) outcomes are arguably the most important elements of success of treatment. The aim of our study was to measure quality of life using validated health status instruments, of patients who have undergone elective laparoscopic colorectal resection for complicated diverticulitis such as fistula, recurrent diverticulitis leading to stricture. <h3>Method</h3> Medical notes of all patients with complicated diverticulitis who underwent elective Laparoscopic colectomy in our hospital between 2012 and 2014 were reviewed. SF-36 and EuroQuol survey are validated instruments for measuring HRQL. <h3>Results</h3> 24 patients underwent laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy for complicated diverticular disease (stricture = 12; fistulas = 12). 17 were males and 7 females. Age group ranged from 41 to 78 (median 56.5). Primary anastomosis (n = 20), Hartmann’s procedure (n = 1) and primary anastomosis with defunctioning loop ileostomy (n = 3). Post operatively, no complications (n = 16), anastomotic leaks (n = 2), ileus (n = 4), new onset atrial fibrillation (n = 1) and pneumonia (n = 1). The two patients with anastomotic leaks were taken back to operating theatre for laparoscopic washout and drain insertion. No patients had conversions. Telephone survey using SF36 and EuroQol questionnaires was undertaken at a median follow-up of 7 months. Twenty patients responded. Median SF36 scores were physical function 84, physical role 86.5, body pain 78.5, general health 67, vitality 57, social function 77, emotional role 80.5, mental health 74.5. Median EuroQol score was 0.80. All the SF36 scores were within the normal range, as were the EuroQol scores. <h3>Conclusion</h3> The health related quality of life for patients who have undergone laparoscopic colectomy for complicated diverticulitis measured using validated health status instruments were normal. <h3>Disclosure of interest</h3> None Declared.
