Abstract

Composite thin films consisting of lead titanate (PT) powder embedded in a vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) copolymer matrix were prepared by a spin-coating technique. The ceramic and copolymer phases of the composite films were poled separately, resulting in samples with three different polarization states: only the ceramic phase poled, only the copolymer phase poled, and the two phases poled in opposite directions. The piezoelectric and pyroelectric coefficients of the composite films were measured. Since the piezoelectric coefficients of PT and P(VDF-TrFE) have opposite signs while the pyroelectric coefficients have the same sign, the composite film with the two phases poled in opposite directions has a higher piezoelectric but lower pyroelectric coefficient than P(VDF-TrFE). This composite film was used to fabricate a single-element needle-type hydrophone and the performance of the hydrophone was evaluated.
