Abstract

Introduction
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) employs a multi-modal rehabilitation programme to aid post operative recovery following colorectal resections. ERAS can be applied in both laparoscopic and open surgery. The aim of the study is to assess ERAS versus conventional post operative care in malignant colorectal cancer resections (CRC) at a single institution.
Method
This is a retrospective study carried out at Macclesfield District General Hospital. ERAS became an integrated into colorectal surgery in 2008. Descriptive data, patient factors and post-operative features were collected for all elective malignant colorectal resections.
Results
See Table 1
Conclusion
Despite a prolonged operative time, ERAS resulted in a shorter hospital stay (p < 0.05). Departures from ERAS can result in delayed hospital discharge, which can occur in the presence of major surgical complications (ileus, anastomotic leak, collections). A targeted rehabilitation programme especially in the elderly patients can provide a cost effective earlier recovery.
Disclosure of interest
None Declared.
