Abstract

Zachariae, B.: Psychotherapy and cultural differences. Some experiences related to psychotherapy with Iranian refugees. Nordisk Psykologi, 1987, 39 (1), 28–42. With the growing number of refugees from the Middle and Far East, and due to the fact, that many refugees have had traumatic experiences related to torture, imprisonment and persecution, there exists an increasing need for psychotherapeutic assistance. This puts a special demand on the psychotherapist to be able to overcome the difficulties related to difference in cultural background. In an attempt to create an outline of a model of «crosscultural psychotherapy», the following article discusses the difficulties related to psychotherapy with clients from a non-western cultural background, based on experiences with three Iranian clients.
