Psychiatric health services research in the Nordic countries.Psychiatric health services research in the Nordic countries has provided much knowledge about the occurrence of mental disorders in the population, much statistics about utilization of inpatient care, and some knowledge about the productivity and effectivity of the care of special disorders, primarily schizophrenia. The research has mainly been quantitative. Apart from research about special treatments, there has been little interest in studies of the impact of different kinds of comprehensive care. The knowledge about the detailed organization of services, including the structure and quality of the personnel, is very limited. With regard to outcome measures the current international diagnostic systems and symptom rating scales have been introduced, whereas, for example, measures of levels of social function are very incomplete, and the development of 'burden of family' and social network scales lags behind the Anglo-Saxon research...
