Abstract

This is an interesting and unusual academic text exploring a person centred approach to working psychotherapeutically with suicidal people. It is interesting in terms of the range of material it covers and unusual in the way the material is presented and the stylistic approach of the author. Dr Leenaars obviously possesses a great deal of academic and clinical knowledge about the topic area but there is much more to this book than this formal content. The text is replete with moving clinical material, philosophical and moral reflections combined with a degree of literary criticism and poetic analysis. It reminds me of the classical (perhaps old fashioned?) academic text that is infused with personal reflections that illuminate the intellectual struggles of the author. This includes several asides throughout the text relating to his conversations with mentors and associates that have influenced and shaped his approach to writing the book.
