All place names and personal names are pseudonyms. The foreign terms in the text of this paper are in Nepali, unless otherwise indicated. The use of Nepali or Temang is not arbitrary, but reflects spontaneous occurrence in my interviews with shamans. Thanks to Professor John G. Kennedy of UCLA for his time, effort, and always constructive criticism and to Professor Walter Goldschmidt for his careful readings and important suggestions. The conclusions, however, are wholly my own, and I take responsibility for them.
