Abstract

It has long been recognized that in order to provide primary medical care for patients with psychological and psychosomatic disturbances, psychotherapy must become part of general practice. Psychotherapy should not only be thought of as a specialist field but it should be an aspect of general practice, and its benefits should be available to patients from all classes of society. The three main pre-requisites for this are as follows: 1. A broad concept of illness embracing physical and psychological disorders, including the psychoneuroses. 2. A flexible form of psychotherapy suited to patients in general practice. 3. A greater awareness of the nature of the relationship that exists between doctor and patient in general practice.
