Abstract

Few studies have focused on grandparent-raised children with behavioral/ emotional problems. The present study examined the therapeutic progress of this population. Data from this descriptive, correlational study were obtained from records of 207 children who received treatment at a child treatment center. Instruments included the Progress Evaluation Scales (PES) and an investigator-constructed tool. Children who had regular paternal contact, were younger when treatment started, and were raised by grandparents with adult partners had significantly more positive change in the PES scores. More thorough clinical assessment of these reconfigured families will lead to improved mental health outcomes for children and will enhance clinical records as sources of research data.
