Abstract
Psychiatric consultation in the management of the patient with psychosomatic disorders often occurs during a de terioration in the patient's clinical course. It is the task of the consultant to use the tools at his disposal to help the patient move toward more adaptive functioning. Often supportive care and brief psychotherapy are sufficient in creating this momen tum. If this intervention does not suffice, the use of psychotropic drugs is indicated. Several specific symptom complexes are dis cussed and recommendations for management are outlined.
