Abstract

The literature dealing with psychosocial treatments for rumination in both mentally retarded and non-retarded persons is reviewed. Both psychodynamic and behavioural treatments are discussed: the latter including treatments involving punishment variants such as shock, liquid irritants and over-correction; extinction; satiation; combinations of treatments; and miscellaneous treatments. Particular attention is paid to the methodological adequacies of the various studies. General deficiencies are registered in terms of sample descriptions, design, dependent measures, inter-observer reliability, side-effects, procedure, generalization and follow-ups.A further purpose of this review is to provide guidelines for the practitioner in both avoiding the methodological pitfalls of the reviewed studies and in aiding the selection of an appropriate treatment
